The Lost Port of Kuala Sepetang

12 Mar 2017 · 2 min read · 326 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

What happened was due to the negligence of past generations and the indifference of the current one. The impact is clear for future generations who will not know their origins and history. They will not recognize or understand the importance of preserving history and heritage because the current generation is not carrying out restoration processes or maintaining history comprehensively.

The tide of modernity is increasingly swallowing and threatening the important history found in Kuala Sepetang. It was once a fishing village that played a significant role, and did you know that there was a very busy Kuala Sepetang port there once upon a time? This treasure can no longer be seen today because it has vanished and was not preserved for other purposes. How unfortunate it is that we did not appreciate the historical value that would have had high tourism appeal if it had been maintained. Our country lost two important gems in Kuala Sepetang due to a lack of awareness among previous generations regarding historical preservation. These were the Port Weld railway line and the Kuala Sepetang Port, as mentioned in the paragraph above.

Port Weld

It is impossible for us to bring these treasures back. What has happened should serve as a lesson, and we must correct any mistakes for the benefit of future generations. If the area around the Kuala Sepetang port had been gazetted as a historical heritage site, the land there would not have become private property as it is now. The same situation applies to the site of the Port Weld station and railway line, parts of which are now used as a fish landing site by fishermen.

Kuala Sepetang port

Many are unaware that the Kuala Sepetang port has existed since the era of

Ngah Ibrahim

before the British used it as a port to transport tin ore from Perak to Penang. If well-preserved, the combination of a historic port and an old railway station could rival historic ports like those in Fremantle, Australia. Today, there are not many traces of the railway line left in Kuala Sepetang, and some can still be seen in the town of Kuala Sepetang, except for a few iron piles that were once part of the railway tracks, while the Kuala Sepetang port has vanished and been lost to the passage of time. Update :

The Actual Location of the Lost Kuala Sepetang Port Has Been Found
