Lenggong is making history after receiving recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2026. This recognition not only elevates Lenggong's profile but also strengthens Malaysia's position on the world heritage map. It is even more special as Lenggong has already been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.

The combination of these two international recognitions makes Lenggong the only area in Peninsular Malaysia to hold dual world-class status. It is not just a symbolic achievement, but a recognition of its extraordinary historical, geological, and cultural value.

This success also proves that Lenggong is no ordinary area. It is a national treasure that holds various important stories about human origins, nature, and unique cultural heritage.

History of World Heritage Site Recognition

In 2012, the Lenggong Valley began to capture global attention when it was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This recognition was granted based on the extraordinary archaeological significance of the area.

The discovery of ancient human remains such as the Perak Man serves as strong evidence that Lenggong is among the earliest human settlement sites in Southeast Asia. Archaeological research here has opened doors to a deeper understanding of prehistoric human life.

This status makes Lenggong an important reference center for researchers, historians, and students from around the world who wish to understand human evolution and early civilizations.

Lenggong UNESCO Global Geopark 2026

In April 2026, Lenggong once again made history when it was officially recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark. This recognition completes the international status held by the area.

This geopark covers several main districts including Temelong, Durian Pipit, Lenggong, Kenering, and Gerik. Each of these areas possesses its own uniqueness in terms of geology and natural heritage.

This geopark status was granted because Lenggong possesses extraordinary geological value, rich biodiversity, and unique cultural heritage. It makes this area important not only for tourism but also for education and research.

Geological Uniqueness and Evidence of Early Human History

One of the main factors for Lenggong receiving this recognition is its wealth of geoheritage. There are 39 geoheritage sites and 21 cultural heritage sites that have been identified.

Among the most interesting is Bukit Bunuh, which contains evidence of an ancient meteorite impact. This area is estimated to be around 1.83 million years old and is the only site of its kind in Southeast Asia.

This discovery provides important insights into the Earth's landscape changes and early human life. It also makes Lenggong an important research location on the international stage.

Natural Diversity and Biodiversity

Lenggong is not only rich in history but also possesses breathtaking natural beauty. The area is filled with lakes, rivers, mountains, and forests that remain well-preserved.

The biodiversity here makes Lenggong a habitat for various species of flora and fauna. This makes the area suitable for ecotourism activities and environmental research.

The combination of natural beauty and historical value makes Lenggong a unique destination that is hard to match elsewhere in Malaysia.

Impact on Tourism and Local Economy

Recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark is expected to have a major impact on the tourism sector in Lenggong. The arrival of tourists from both within and outside the country is expected to increase significantly.

This directly opens up economic opportunities for local residents. Various sectors such as accommodation, food, handicrafts, and transportation will grow rapidly.

Furthermore, it also provides opportunities for local entrepreneurs to engage in the tourism industry more actively and competitively.

International Education and Research Opportunities

Lenggong now has the potential to become an international-standard open education center. With the recognition received, more educational institutions are expected to conduct research in this area.

Programs such as Geoschool and academic visits have begun to be implemented to attract the interest of students and researchers. These efforts will make Lenggong an important knowledge hub.

The proposal to establish a special institute in Lenggong will also further strengthen the area's role as a global learning center.

Community Role and the Future of Lenggong

Lenggong's success would not be meaningful without the involvement of the local community. Residents play a crucial role in preserving and promoting this area.

Various initiatives such as geo-entrepreneurship and community programs have been planned to ensure that the benefits of development can be shared by all.

The future of Lenggong is looking increasingly bright. With careful planning and the support of all parties, this area can become a sustainable, world-class tourism and education destination.
