Why Is There a Tombstone Inside the Kota Lama Kanan Mosque in Kuala Kangsar?
Many may already know the truth; it is not a tombstone marking a human burial in the front row of the Kota Lama Kanan Mosque, but rather a memorial stone commemorating Sultan Mansur Syah I, who was
the 2nd Sultan of Perak
from 1549 to 1577, who allegedly vanished while performing Friday prayers inside this mosque.
Sultan Mansur Syah I passed away in 1577, though the exact circumstances of his death remain unknown. According to local lore, while he was performing Friday prayers at the Kota Lama Kanan Mosque, he suddenly vanished. After a long period without any news, the people assumed the Sultan had passed away. Since then, he has been referred to as Marhum Kota Lama Kanan by the local residents.
Sultan Mansur Syah I has no tomb, only the memorial stone mentioned above. To commemorate the Sultan who vanished while performing Friday prayers at the mosque, a tombstone was placed in the front row of the Kota Lama Kanan Mosque by Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah I, the 28th Sultan of Perak.
This mosque was also burned down by the British colonialists during the Perak War from 1875 to 1876 and was rebuilt in 1916. The mosque is located in Kampung Batang Kulim, Kuala Kangsar, Perak.
