The Story of Parang Panjang vs Communists in Bekor (Part 2)
Uda Mohamad bin Malim Elok was stabbed in the stomach while attempting to attack the communists with a long machete (parang panjang). Meanwhile, his house was burned down by the communists. The figures who stood as pillars in defending the villagers included Tuan Haji Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Manan, Tuan Haji Salleh bin Abdul Manan, Tuan Haji Kulub Alang, and several local leaders such as the village head.
The weapons used by the Malay villagers consisted of long machetes (parang panjang), goloks, and keris. Meanwhile, the communists used rifles, spears, and other bladed weapons. In this desperate situation, Tuan Haji Shaari bin Haji Amin ordered his wife and children to take shelter in the house. He, along with seven to eight other villagers, went out to assist the others. Tuan Haji Shaari bin Haji Amin, Daud bin Haji Amin, and his cousin were killed by stabbing. Tuan Haji Amin bin Kulub Hitam, Abdul Munan bin Haji Amin, and Tuan Haji Abdul Rahman bin Abdul Manan were on the front lines. All of them fell as martyrs while defending the lives of the Kampung Bekor residents. The entire Malay settlement in Bekor was attacked simultaneously on March 6, 1946. The attacks were not only carried out in public spaces but involved house-to-house raids. The Malay villagers who were attacked defended their family members first before joining forces to help others. The besieged situation caused many sleeping children and women to become victims. The 'parang panjang' group, led by Uda Mohamad bin Malim Elok along with three other villagers, faced hundreds of attackers. After nearly an hour of defending their families from the brutal communist attack, they finally had the opportunity to help other villagers. Some of the communists felt pity for the women and children; therefore, they only killed the men. During the chaos, Abdul Kassim bin Awang Mat Yassin managed to escape. The women of Bekor, who were already synonymous with the knowledge and experience of using the parang panjang, became the backbone in defending their families. In one incident, when the communists ordered all women and children inside a house to come down, Ngah Zabedah binti Sidi took the opportunity to prepare a mixture of chili water and splashed it onto the faces of the communists as they were about to rush into the house. This action angered the communists further, resulting in Ngah Zabedah binti Sidi being stabbed with a spear. Other women took this opportunity to carry their young children to safety. Ibrahim bin Uda Mohamad was carried away by his mother through a rubber plantation and eventually reached the villagers' hiding hut. Initially, this hiding place was relatively safe until it was eventually discovered by the communists. The house was burned, and the villagers hiding inside could not act as they were surrounded. One of the communist members reportedly opened the door and ordered everyone hiding to come down without weapons. To ensure all Malay residents of Kampung Bekor were killed, the communist group in Kampung Kelang succeeded in cutting off the bridge at Sungai Bekor. This prevented the Malay villagers from receiving help from the residents of Kampung Mandah. This situation also delayed the movement of villagers who wanted to provide assistance. The communists' strategy of sounding the mosque drum (beduk) caused the villagers to be in a state of confusion, especially when trying to provide help. This tactic also prevented the Malay villagers from gathering in large numbers in one place, making it easier for them to be killed.
