The Identity of the Flag, Logo, Crest, and State Anthem of Perak
Greetings to all in Perak. Many of us may still be unaware of Perak's identity despite having lived in this blessed state for a long time. We will share some information regarding the identity of Perak.
The state flag of Perak Darul Ridzuan consists of three horizontal stripes in white, yellow, and black. These three stripes are of equal width. They carry the following meanings:
- The white color represents the greatness of His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan.
- The yellow color represents the greatness of His Royal Highness the Raja Muda of Perak Darul Ridzuan.
- The black color represents the greatness of His Highness the Raja Di Hilir of Perak Darul Ridzuan.
The State Emblem of Perak Darul Ridzuan features the Crest of His Royal Highness the Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan. This crest:
- Is encircled by a crescent moon containing rice stalks.
- The crest symbolizes the sovereignty of the reigning Monarch.
- The crescent moon signifies Islam as the official religion.
- The rice stalks represent the people's source of livelihood and the fertility of the state.
The official state anthem of Perak was originally a song composed by the French composer Pierre Jean de Beranger (1780-1857).
The song was introduced by a French band performing on Mahé Island in the Seychelles. Sultan Raja Abdullah Muhammad Shah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ja'afar Safi ud-din Mu'azzam Shah, who was exiled to the Seychelles, introduced the song, known as 'Terang Bulan', upon his return to Perak.
Sultan Abdullah was exiled by the British government on March 30, 1877, for his alleged involvement in the assassination of the British Resident JWW Birch in Pasir Salak. As an art enthusiast, he continued to hone his talent as a songwriter while in exile. He wrote the lyrics for the song
"Allah Lanjutkan Usia Sultan"
which was adapted to the melody of 'Terang Bulan' and subsequently adopted as the official anthem of Perak Darul Ridzuan. The melody of this song was later chosen as the melody for the national anthem of Malaysia, the song
