The History of the Founding of the Manjoi Cluster

24 Feb 2017 · 1 min read · 4 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar
This village was founded by Uda Kidan in 1900. Uda Kidan was originally from Bota, Perak.

Manjoi is a village located northeast of Ipoh city, Perak Darul Ridzuan. In the 1985 Ipoh City Planning Scheme, Kampung Manjoi was excluded from the plan because many residents disagreed with it, particularly regarding property taxes, land taxes, waste collection fees, and so on. Consequently, Kampung Manjoi remained neglected for over 20 years compared to the development of Ipoh city.

This village was founded by Uda Kidan in 1900. Uda Kidan was originally from

Bota, Perak

. He, along with several of his friends, cleared land outside of Ipoh to start a new life. According to the local residents, the word Manjoi was taken from the name of Uda Kidan's grandfather, Tok Manjoi. He was said to be a very pious and religious man. Uda Kidan was said to be very close to his grandfather. Tok Manjoi once advised his grandson to look after the land here and ensure that the residents did not quarrel among themselves.

There are also stories stating that the name Manjoi was taken from the name of Uda Kidan's wife, who was nicknamed Manja. When the word 'manja' is spoken in the Parit dialect, it sounds like 'manje' and over time, the word eventually became Manjoi.

Not long after, many residents, especially from

Parit

and

Bota

migrated here. Kampung Manjoi grew larger and began to be known as a Malay settlement in Ipoh.

As the population increased, especially after the government agreed to grant temporary land titles to the residents, more villages were opened here. To this day, the Manjoi Cluster is the largest urban Malay settlement in Perak and also in Malaysia. The Manjoi Cluster is now inhabited by over 40,000 residents covering an area of nearly 600 hectares. The cluster, which includes Kampung Manjoi, Kampung Tengku Hussein, Kampung Sungai Tapah, Kampung Dato’ Ahmad Said, and Kampung Jelapang Baru, is currently undergoing a transformation.
