Kuala Kurau and Bagan Serai Mukim Boundary Stone Rediscovered After 70 Years
Everyone knows that boundary stones placed at the edge of an area serve to mark the limit of a territory under its jurisdiction.
Marking areas with boundary stones has been practiced for hundreds of years and continues to this day, even as we have moved into the modern era.
70 years ago, even before our country celebrated independence, was the last time the boundary stone between the two mukims of Kuala Kurau and Bagan Serai was seen.
This may have been because the marker stone was lost during the great floods that hit the state of Perak and our country some time before independence.
The marker stone was rediscovered in 2015 by residents of Kampung Parit Sungai Dungun while they were working together to clean up the Kerian Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) quarters, which were to be converted into a hall.
The boundary marker stone is about 1.4 meters long and weighs over 1 ton. According to the Village Head of Kampung Parit Sungai Dungun, Azhar Yaacob, this boundary stone was found near the main ditch of Kampung Parit Sungai Dungun during cleaning work at the JPS quarters using an excavator.
The discovery of this boundary stone between the two mukims (Mukim Kuala Kurau and Mukim Bagan Serai) is an undeniable piece of history. This is because Kampung Parit Sungai Dungun is indeed known as the border village between the two mukims as stated.
Before this boundary stone was rediscovered, the government and the residents of Kampung Parit Sungai Dungun had to use the main ditch in Kampung Parit Sungai Dungun as the basis for marking the boundary between the two mukims of Kuala Kurau and Bagan Serai. This was the only way to resolve any issues that could involve residents' land matters.
The benefit of finding this boundary stone is that it allows for the exact location of the border to be identified more accurately. It also has the potential to become a new landmark for Kampung Parit Sungai Dungun because, due to its uniqueness, it is almost impossible to find such boundary stones still in existence, especially in the Kerian district.
