Gopeng

As an old town established in the 1800s, it dates back to the same era as the founding of Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur. It is located in Mukim Teja, where the Teja River flows. Some readers of orangperak.com have asked whether this Teja is related to Tun Teja from the Malay Sultanate era in Malacca. We provide this information to add to your knowledge.

Raja Alang Iskandar

For your information, the name Teja was taken from a tomb called Makam Teja in Kota Baharu, which is not located in Kelantan, but in Gopeng, Perak. He was the Bendahara, Raja Alang Iskandar, who resided in Kuala Keboi, Kampar. He was responsible for collecting revenue, such as taxes on all goods entering and leaving Kota Bharu, generally at the mouth of the Kinta River. At that time, Kota Bharu was famous for its tin mining activities. Shortly after being appointed as Bendahara by the 22nd Sultan of Perak, Sultan Abdullah Muhammad Shah I, he passed away and was buried in Kuala Teja, Kota Bharu, and was titled Almarhum Teja. When Raja Alang Iskandar was appointed as Bendahara, his name was already in the succession line to be crowned Sultan of Perak. However, he passed away before ascending the throne. He was the father of Sultan Idris Murshidul Adzam Shah, the 28th Sultan of Perak.

Raja Alang Iskandar

So, that is the story regarding the origin of the name Mukim Teja. It was named to commemorate the Bendahara, Raja Alang Iskandar, who was titled Almarhum Teja after his passing, and it is not related to Tun Teja from the Malacca era.
