An-Nur Mosque at Universiti Teknologi Petronas, A Symbol of Beauty and Devotion on the Lake
An-Nur Mosque at Universiti Teknologi Petronas, a majestic floating mosque, is not just a place of worship, but a symbol of harmony between modern architecture and Islamic values. Spanning 4,000 square meters, this mosque offers a main prayer hall, decorated prayer areas, visitor lounges, and complete ablution facilities.
Located in Tronoh near Bandar Seri Iskandar, this mosque was built with a capacity to accommodate up to 8,000 congregants. An-Nur Mosque is one of PETRONAS' contributions to ensuring the well-being of the community, particularly in fulfilling spiritual needs.
History of An-Nur Mosque: From a Small Surau to a Majestic Mosque
Originally, the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Perak Branch Mosque was built in 1986 and began operations in 1988. Starting as a surau capable of accommodating 1,000 congregants, the mosque was built at a cost of RM850,000.
It was inaugurated alongside the USM campus by the Acting Sultan of Perak, Raja Nazrin Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah, on September 14, 1990 (24 Safar 1411 Hijrah). This date also marked the mosque's recognition as an official venue for Friday prayers.
In 2000, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) took over the administration of the mosque. As the capacity of the old mosque was no longer sufficient to accommodate the growing number of congregants, UTP took the initiative to build a new mosque. The completed An-Nur Mosque can now accommodate up to 4,000 congregants at one time.
The name "An-Nur" was chosen as a symbol of the light of faith that illuminates the campus and the surrounding community.
