Tracing the Legacy of Tuan Haji Idris Al Minangkabawi: Tuan Haji Idris Canal and Al Madinah Mosque, Bandar
A journey to trace the history and heritage of our ancestors is a deeply meaningful experience. Recently, I, along with Mokhtar and Hakimi, had the opportunity to revisit several historical locations around Kampung Moyang in Bandar and Teluk Penadah, Perak.
Among the destinations visited were the Al Madinah Mosque in Bandor, the old cemetery, and the family Madrasah in Teluk Penadah. However, the most intriguing discovery was the Tuan Haji Idris Strait or Canal, an old waterway associated with my ancestor, Tuan Haji Idris Al Minangkabawi.
Al Madinah Mosque, Bandar: The Legacy of Tuan Haji Idris Al Minangkabawi
The Al Madinah Mosque in Bandor is one of the tangible proofs of Tuan Haji Idris Al Minangkabawi's legacy. This mosque was built by him personally some time ago. According to history, the construction of this mosque was made possible through a waqf (endowment) provided by the Panglima Kinta, consisting of timber from the Old Panglima Kinta Mosque in Ipoh.
This mosque is not just a place of worship, but also a symbol of the presence of Islam and Tuan Haji Idris's role in spreading the religion in the area.
The Al Madinah Mosque still stands firm today, serving as a silent witness to the struggles and contributions of Tuan Haji Idris. The presence of this mosque also demonstrates the close bond between the local community and the Islamic faith, which was sown by our ancestors centuries ago.
Tuan Idris Canal: A Buried Historical Trail
Our journey continued by tracing the Tuan Idris Strait, an old waterway known to the local community as one of the important locations associated with Tuan Haji Idris. This strait is located along the Perak River, and to reach it, we had to navigate the Kinta River with the help of Pak Hassan, his son, and Saiful Azli.
This journey was not only physically challenging but also emotionally moving, as it transported us back to the days of yore.
The Tuan Idris Strait is believed to have a close connection with Tuan Haji Idris Al Minangkabawi. According to the elders, this strait may have been used by him as an important route for daily activities or missionary work. The existence of this strait holds deep significance as it further reinforces the presence and influence of Tuan Haji Idris in the area.
Family Madrasah in Teluk Penadah: A Traditional Education Center
In addition to tracing the old strait, we also had the chance to visit the family Madrasah in Teluk Penadah, located on the banks of the Perak River. This Madrasah was a traditional education center that may have been used by Tuan Haji Idris's family and the local community to study religious knowledge.
The presence of this Madrasah shows how important education was in the lives of the people of the past, and it also reflects Tuan Haji Idris's role in disseminating knowledge.
Old Cemetery and Tombstones at Sungai Lumut
Our journey would not be complete without visiting the old cemetery around Bandor, including the tomb of Sheikh Muhammad Taib Al Minangkabawi. Furthermore, we also traveled along the Sungai Lumut and discovered several old tombstones on the riverbank. These tombstones may belong to important individuals in local history, and they serve as valuable archaeological evidence of the lives of the people of the past.
Conclusion: Appreciating Heritage and History
This journey was not just a physical expedition, but also a spiritual and emotional adventure. Tracing the legacy of Tuan Haji Idris Al Minangkabawi through the Al Madinah Mosque, the Tuan Idris Strait, and the family Madrasah in Teluk Penadah gave me a deeper understanding of my family history and the role of my ancestor in shaping the local community.
This heritage must be preserved and cherished by future generations. It is not just about buildings or locations, but about the values, struggles, and sacrifices made by our ancestors to ensure that Islam and education continue to flourish in our homeland.
May the efforts to trace and preserve this heritage continue so that history is not forgotten and remains a source of inspiration for the younger generation.
