The Story of the Endowed Shophouse in Ipoh

The donor (Waqif), named Toh Puan Chah @ Toh Puan Haji Aisha Binti Che Teba, was born in 1892. She endowed her property on September 20, 1947. The endowed property is a shophouse that can still be seen today on Jalan Sultan Yussuf in Ipoh. Previously, the area was known as Belfield Street, named after the 9th British Resident of Perak, Sir Henry Conway Belfield.
The management of this waqf property was entrusted to Yeop Adlan Bin Abdul Aziz from Bagan Serai and Mat Wajit Bin Che Tumang from Ipoh. It was later entrusted to the Religious Council to continue the legacy of the waqf property from Toh Puan Chah @ Toh Puan Haji Aisha Binti Che Teba. With the sacred and pure words of waqf from the heart of Toh Puan Chah @ Toh Puan Haji Aisha Binti Che Teba,
"When I die, my land and shophouse on Belfield Street are hereby endowed to help poor and sick Malays, to fund the education of Malays, to help repair Mosques or Madrasahs, to pay for Quranic studies, to maintain my grave, and for other charitable acts, as stated in this Waqf deed written in English according to my wishes, fully explained to me, and witnessed by two witnesses.."
Today, this heritage building is rented to S.S. Mubaruk & Brothers (M) Sdn Bhd to generate returns and waqf benefits as entrusted by the Settlor, Toh Puan Chah. This bookstore surely reminds us of our school days. It is truly nostalgic! May the donor be granted continuous rewards without end.
