The Taiping Agreement declaration was a significant pact proclaimed in Taiping, Perak. It was a crucial agreement in which Indonesia and Tanah Melayu aimed to achieve independence together.

The agreement was conducted between Dr. Burhanuddin Al Helmy and Ibrahim Yaakub, as leaders of the Kesatuan Rakyat Indonesia Semenanjung (KRIS), and Indonesian nationalist leaders, Sukarno and Mohd Hatta. For your information, the Parti Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya (PKMM) was the first Malay political party in our country, and their goal and ambition were to fight for independence to form a republic based on the unity of nationalist, religious, and socialist ideologies. Dr. Burhanuddin Al Helmy, along with many other Malay political leaders in the Parti Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya (PKMM), was also committed to the struggle to liberate Tanah Melayu from the grip of colonial rule.

Sang Saka Malaya, the flag of the Parti Kebangsaan Melayu Malaya (PKMM) which advocated for the establishment of a republic through unification with the Republic of Indonesia.

Many Malay leaders at that time desired the independence of Tanah Melayu, and there were relentless efforts to achieve it. Thus, the Taiping Agreement discussed here was an attempt to reach a consensus within the Melayu Raya sphere, which encompassed both Indonesia and Tanah Melayu. Since the beginning of the Japanese occupation, the cruelty of the Japanese military actually unified the administrations of Tanah Melayu and Indonesia. This was the first time in the modern era that the strength of the Malay race rose across the Nusantara region. On August 12, 1945, leaders of the Kesatuan Rakyat Indonesia Semenanjung (KRIS) met with Sukarno and Mohd Hatta at the Taiping Airport, Perak, while they were on their way back from the Japanese Imperial Army's Southeast Asia Headquarters in Saigon.

Following the meeting, an agreement and consensus were reached. It concerned the sovereignty of Tanah Melayu, which would join Indonesia in declaring independence on August 17, 1945. Unfortunately, this effort failed when the Japanese military government in Tokyo announced their surrender on August 17, 1945. Indirectly, the agreement made in Taiping failed to form Melayu Raya to achieve joint independence.

However, even though the effort to form Melayu Raya failed, the leaders in Indonesia proceeded with their declaration of independence on the date promised during the meeting at Taiping Airport, Perak, while Tanah Melayu declared its independence on August 31, 1957.
