The History of the RMN Fleet Command Headquarters in Lumut
In 1983, the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Fleet Command Headquarters was relocated from the Naval Base in Woodlands, Singapore, to the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Base in Lumut.
This relocation followed the government's original 1969 plan to establish a permanent Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) base in Peninsular Malaysia.
To realize this plan, various factors were considered in deciding to build a new base for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) in the Lumut area. To ensure the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) had the capability to control and manage its fleet, several studies were conducted to determine the most strategic location for the new headquarters and base. At that time, the Fleet Command was known as the Fleet Commander's Headquarters and was led by First Admiral Harun Bin Dato’ Dr Mohd Salleh. As additional information, First Admiral Harun Bin Dato’ Dr Mohd Salleh concluded his service on April 1, 1996, with the rank of Vice Admiral. On November 20, 1984, an official opening ceremony for the Fleet Commander's Headquarters building and the Royal Malaysian Navy communication system in Lumut, Perak, was held. The ceremony was officiated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia at the time, Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (

). The inaugurated Fleet Commander's Headquarters was the largest Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) operations center, responsible for managing all operations of Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) vessels.
The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) communication system developed in Lumut at that time was the most modern in the region, capable of connecting directly with Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) units overseas at distances of approximately two thousand to five thousand nautical miles using a computer system. The Malaysian government spent significant funds to provide various infrastructure for the comfort of Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) personnel, whose numbers were increasing daily. The establishment of the newly opened Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Fleet Commander's Headquarters at that time marked another advancement for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) in utilizing modern equipment, aligning with the overall development and modernization of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN).
