The History and Connection of Madrasah Idrisiah with the Sultan of Perak

01 Mar 2019 · 2 min read · 191 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

As is widely known, Madrasah Idrisiah was named after the late Sultan Idris I Mursyidul `Adzam Shah. He was the 28th Sultan of Perak and the founder of the madrasah.

The Sultan was also the benefactor who endowed the most valuable assets, such as land and rental income from shophouses around Kuala Kangsar. For your information, loyal readers of orangperak.com, this madrasah was developed during the reign of his son, namely

Sultan Iskandar Shah (the 30th Sultan of Perak)

in 1922. Madrasah Idrisiah was developed with the contributions of various scholars, one of whom we have previously introduced to you:

Haji Nawawi Bin Haji Mohd Tahir, who was the religious teacher to five Sultans of Perak

. It is an undeniable historical fact that this madrasah was the first Islamic religious educational institution in the state of Perak to utilize a formal schooling system while maintaining the characteristics of a 'pondok' (traditional religious school) until the end of 1970.

This fact is evidenced by the arrival of the first group of students, consisting of 23 orphans who lived in the dormitory on the upper floor of the madrasah building. The ground floor of the building was used as classrooms during school hours, and the building is now 88 years old. The golden era of this madrasah is said to have been very impressive, as students came from abroad, including Brunei, Indonesia, and other neighboring countries, producing many prominent scholars and clerics at that time. In 1970, the glory of Madrasah Idrisiah began to fade, and in 1985,

Sultan Azlan Shah (the 34th Sultan of Perak)

decreed the revival of the madrasah that had been established by his grandfather, Sultan Idris I.

Sultan Azlan Shah

also consented for Madrasah Idrisiah to be registered under the administration of the Perak Islamic Religious Council in accordance with Section 33, First Schedule, Clause 10 of the Perak Islamic Religious Administration Enactment 11/65.

Through the efforts and consent of

Sultan Azlan Shah

, Madrasah Idrisiah indirectly became eligible to receive 11 teachers from the Ministry of Education Malaysia, starting in 1985. The efforts of

Sultan Azlan Shah

played a significant role in helping the people of the state become scholars and leaders. This is the uniqueness of religious educational centers like Madrasah Idrisiah, which has its own role in national development and holds historical value closely linked to the Sultan of Perak. As one of the oldest religious schools in the state of Perak, which plays a role in producing future scholars and leaders, its position should be elevated alongside other educational institutions because it holds the image of the Perak Sultanate and is preserved as a treasure and heritage of the state of Perak.
