Taiping District Mosque, A Symbol of History and Islamic Architectural Beauty

The Taiping District Mosque, formerly known as the New Malay Mosque of Taiping Town, is an important religious and cultural landmark in Taiping, Perak. The mosque was built in 1968 to replace the old Malay mosque, which had become dilapidated and could no longer accommodate the growing number of congregants.

Located on a 4.0201-acre plot of land at Lot 2362, Bandar Taiping, the mosque was developed at a cost of RM500,000. The funds were obtained from contributions by the Federal Government, the Perak State Government, and sincere donations from the public who were concerned about religious development.

In 1972, the mosque was officially inaugurated with full ceremony by the late Sultan of Perak, Sultan Idris Shah II. This inauguration marked a new era in the development of Islam in Taiping, where the mosque became not just a place of worship, but also a hub for religious and social activities for the local community.

In 1987, the mosque was designated as the Taiping District Mosque by the state government due to its unique architecture, large size, and stunning beauty. Since then, the name Taiping District Mosque has remained in use to this day.

The mosque serves not only as a place for Friday prayers and Eid prayers for the residents of Taiping and its surrounding areas, but also as a focal point for various religious programs such as lectures, talks, and community activities. The presence of this mosque has united people of various races and backgrounds, making it a symbol of unity and harmony.

CONSTRUCTION AND ARCHITECTURE

The design of the Taiping District Mosque was inspired by the late Sultan Idris Shah II, who was impressed by the architectural beauty of the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur. He wanted a mosque that would not only function as a place of worship but also as a symbol of Islamic grandeur in Taiping.

Therefore, the mosque's design combines traditional and modern elements, creating a unique identity that captivates everyone who visits.

Originally, the mosque was equipped with two domes resembling those of the National Mosque. One medium-sized dome was located above the ablution area, while another small dome was located atop the mosque's minaret. However, no dome was built on the roof of the main building in the initial stages.

After several years, both domes suffered damage due to erosion and rust. In the 1990s, the domes were replaced with crescent-shaped domes, which became a signature feature of the mosque. Additionally, a large dome was added to the roof of the main building, giving it a more magnificent and prominent appearance.

The 30-meter-high minaret is also a major attraction. It serves not only as a place for the call to prayer (azan) but also as a symbol of Islamic greatness rising high in the heart of Taiping town. Calligraphic carvings of holy Quranic verses also adorn the interior and exterior walls of the mosque, further enhancing the beauty and sanctity of this place of worship.

FACILITIES AND AMENITIES

The Taiping District Mosque is equipped with various modern facilities to assist congregants and visitors. Among the facilities provided are:
