Rumah Tiang Seribu in Teluk Intan, A Historical Memory of the Past
According to the late Tan Sri Professor Khoo Kay Kim, this building was one of the earliest structures developed when Teluk Anson Town was established in 1880. It served as an administrative building for the Assistant Resident of British Perak and the Lower Perak District Officer, who made Teluk Anson their administrative center. A notable Assistant Resident during the early days of Teluk Anson Town was Captain Tristam Speedy, who previously served as a Military Police Officer to Tengku Menteri Ngah Ibrahim.
Meanwhile, the first District Officer of Lower Perak was Mr. W.F.B. Paul, who later served as the British Resident of Sungai Ujong (now Seremban, Negeri Sembilan). Called the 'Rumah Tiang Seribu' because of the many pillars supporting the building, it was constructed without using any nails; everything was doweled and chiseled together.
It is believed that this building was destroyed even before the Second World War took place. The site of this building was later used to construct the administrative building for the Lower Perak District Council. After the Teluk Intan Municipal Council moved to a new building on Jalan Speedy, the site was leveled and turned into a commercial area, where the Teluk Intan branches of CIMB Bank and Maybank now operate, as we can see today.
One interesting detail that catches our attention is the two cannons seen in the final photo, which has been enlarged from the original image. These two cannons were positioned at the entrance to the Rumah Tiang Seribu. If observed closely, these cannons appear similar to those found in front of the Teluk Intan Court and the Chenderong Balai Police Station. Are they the same cannons as those shown in this picture? If you have any information regarding this, please contact us so we can solve this mystery.
