Proclamation of Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah as the 35th Sultan of Perak on May 29, 2014
On the morning of May 29, 2014, the history of the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan was written in gold when the Regent of Perak, Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah, was officially proclaimed as the new Sultan of Perak. The full ceremonial announcement was delivered by the Orang Kaya Bendahara Seri Maharaja, General (Rtd) Tan Sri Mohd Zahid Zainuddin at the Balairong Seri, Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar, prior to the funeral of Sultan Azlan Shah. This ceremony not only fulfilled royal customs but also marked the beginning of the reign of a knowledgeable and authoritative monarch.
The appointment of Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah as the 35th Sultan of Perak was decided during a special meeting of the Perak Dewan Negara, in accordance with the legal provisions and traditions of the Malay Sultanate in the state. This proclamation took place in a somber atmosphere following the passing of Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah, the 34th Sultan of Perak, on May 28, 2014.
His Majesty was not only a ruler beloved by the people but also the biological father of Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah, making this transition of the throne a deeply meaningful moment.
Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah, who was born on November 27, 1956, brings a new dimension to the history of the Malaysian Sultanate. He is the first Sultan in the country to hold a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, obtained from Harvard University, United States, a world-renowned institution. Prior to that, he also studied at the University of Oxford, England, where he earned his Bachelor's degree with honors.
His high level of education is not merely a symbol, but reflects a deep commitment to knowledge and human development. With a solid academic background, Sultan Nazrin Shah is believed to be capable of leading Perak toward more holistic progress, combining traditional wisdom with modern thinking.
The proclamation ceremony at the Balairong Seri took place in an atmosphere of full decorum and order. The presence of state dignitaries, including members of the Dewan Negara, bore witness to the legitimacy and high stature of the ceremony. Before the official announcement, the ceremony was graced with the recitation of prayers, emphasizing the importance of blessings in every step of the administration.
This proclamation also met the legal requirements according to the Perak State Constitution, which stipulates an orderly process of power transition. In this regard, Raja Dr. Nazrin Shah met all the criteria as the heir to the throne, including his previous experience as the Regent.
The appointment of Sultan Nazrin Shah cannot be separated from the legacy of Sultan Azlan Shah, who ruled Perak for 28 years (1984–2014). Sultan Azlan Shah was not only respected as a ruler but also as a revered judicial figure, having served as the Chief Justice. His reign left a profound impact on the fields of justice, education, and the socioeconomic development of Perak.
With the passing of Sultan Azlan Shah, the people of Perak lost a highly respected father figure. However, the appointment of Sultan Nazrin Shah provides new hope, as he has long been involved in state administrative affairs and understands the aspirations of the people.
As the 35th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah shoulders a great responsibility in ensuring the stability of the state, whether in terms of politics, economy, or social affairs. Among the main challenges he faces is strengthening the unity of the people in an era of diverse racial and religious sentiments. The role of the Sultan as a unifier is critical in ensuring that harmony is preserved.
In addition, he must also encourage sustainable development by leveraging the natural resources and rich cultural heritage of Perak. Balanced development that takes into account environmental aspects and economic progress is essential to ensure the long-term well-being of the people.
With his excellent academic background, Sultan Nazrin Shah is also expected to continue the legacy of educational excellence in Perak. Higher education and research could be key focuses in driving the state's progress toward a more progressive direction.
The proclamation of Sultan Nazrin Shah is not just a change of leader, but the beginning of an era that promises transformation based on knowledge and integrity. Under his leadership, Perak has the potential to become a model of a developed state without sacrificing traditional values.
May Allah SWT bless the reign of Sultan Nazrin Shah and grant him the strength to lead the state of Perak toward even greater glory.
