Perak Bans Sale of Single-Use Plastic Bags Starting March 1, 2026: 6-Month Trial Period Granted

25 Jan 2026 · 2 min read · 4,533 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

The Perak state government is taking drastic measures to preserve environmental sustainability by enforcing a ban on the sale of single-use plastic bags starting March 1, 2026. This move is seen as part of the state's commitment toward reducing plastic pollution, which is becoming increasingly concerning.

This step is also in line with the green policy introduced to encourage eco-friendly practices among the public and businesses. According to the state government, sellers will be given a six-month adjustment period before legal action is taken.

6-Month Trial Period Before Legal Enforcement

Affected businesses will not be immediately penalized when the ban begins. Instead, a six-month grace period will be provided to allow them to adjust their business operations. This includes finding alternatives such as using reusable or biodegradable bags.

State Science, Environment, and Green Technology Committee Chairman, Teh Kok Lim, emphasized that after this period, any sale of single-use plastic bags will be subject to action by local authorities (PBT).

This step is crucial to ensure that the implementation of the ban truly has a positive impact, rather than just being a policy on paper.

Ban Focus Areas Include Tourism and Commercial Locations

The ban is not limited to business premises such as supermarkets and fast-food restaurants; it also covers natural areas and major tourist spots. This includes Permanent Forest Reserves, the Royal Belum State Park, Pulau Sembilan State Park, as well as the Geoparks in Lenggong and Kinta Valley.

This decision reflects the state government's comprehensive commitment to controlling plastic usage, which has a significant impact on local flora and fauna.

Advice to Businesses: Use Eco-Friendly Alternatives

Businesses that wish to continue providing bags to customers are advised to use more sustainable options, such as reusable bags or those made from biodegradable materials. This not only meets the new requirements but also contributes to corporate social responsibility.

According to Teh Kok Lim, "Like it or not, this step must be implemented," highlighting how serious the state government is in ensuring this change happens.

The Role of the Community in Making the Sustainability Policy a Success

Beyond enforcement by the government, the effectiveness of this policy also depends on the level of awareness and cooperation from the public. The community should view this ban not as a burden, but as an opportunity to work together to save the environment.

Public support is vital so that this policy does not stop at the implementation stage but becomes a daily culture in life.

Perak's Green Policy as an Example for Other States

With the implementation of this ban, Perak has the potential to become a prime example for other states in carrying out plastic reduction initiatives. Change may be difficult at first, but the long-term results will certainly have a major impact on the environment.

Shared awareness and support from all parties will make this policy a success that can be emulated.
