Minyak Afiat: A Traditional Heritage and Pride of Perak

Minyak Afiat, a brand synonymous with traditional Malay medicine, has traveled a long journey since its inception in 1924. Fueled by high spirit and dedication, Minyak Afiat is not just a product, but a legacy preserved from generation to generation.

This article explores the history, development, and success of Syarikat Minyak Afiat, a family business that has successfully maintained its relevance in the traditional medicine industry for nearly a century.

The Origins of Minyak Afiat

Minyak Afiat was founded in 1924 by Tuan Haji Panjang Kamaruddin from Tambun, Perak. He was inspired to create this oil after recovering from paralysis using a formulation of tree leaves and roots. Initially, the oil was produced to be donated to villagers as a form of health aid.

However, the oil later became an important source of income. After the passing of Tuan Haji Panjang Kamaruddin, the oil business was continued by his nephew, Tuan Haji Khalid bin Uda Ismail, and his adopted daughter, Puan Badariah. Both played a crucial role in ensuring the business's continuity.

Formation of Syarikat Perusahaan Afiat

In 1954, Tuan Haji Khalid bin Uda Ismail established Syarikat Perusahaan Afiat with an initial capital of between RM100 and RM200. The company was a family business specializing in the production of traditional massage oil.

Using profits and loans, Tuan Haji Khalid successfully expanded the company's operations, including purchasing assets and collaborating with his cousin, Puan Badariah, in the production of the oil.

Manual Bottling Process

In 1970, the bottling process for Minyak Afiat was still done manually. The oil was filled into bottles by hand, indicating that the company still relied on human labor to perform these tasks. This manual method was likely influenced by the limitations of automation technology at the time, where modern machinery had not yet been fully introduced or was perhaps impractical for bottling Minyak Afiat in that era.

Registration of Syarikat Perusahaan Afiat

On January 1, 1982, Tuan Haji Khalid registered the business as Syarikat Perusahaan Afiat to reflect its growth. The purpose of this registration was to ensure the continuity of the business within his family.

At that time, the company had only 7 employees, including his children and nephews, whom he trained to become skilled workers and salespeople. Male salespeople were chosen to market the products across districts, while the company's account clerk was assisted by Tuan Haji Khalid himself, who had extensive experience in the field.

Purchase of Lot 4184

In 1986, Syarikat Minyak Afiat Sdn. Bhd. purchased Lot 4184 in Kota Lama Kiri, Kuala Kangsar, through a bank auction for between RM80,000 and RM90,000. This purchase was a significant step in establishing the oil production site and the company's administrative office, which continues to operate to this day.

This move reflected sound financial management and strategic investment in infrastructure development, creating a solid foundation for their operations and ensuring the company's long-term stability and growth.

Purchase of Lot 4022

In 1988, the company purchased Lot 4022, previously owned by the late Sultan Idris Iskandar al-Mutawakkil Alallahi Shah, for RM70,000. This land was used to establish a hot oil factory adjacent to Lot 4184.

This land is still in use today, reflecting the company's strategic decision and respect for the previous owner, while highlighting their success and long-term resilience in the hot oil industry.

Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) Certification

In 1995, Syarikat Minyak Afiat obtained Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification for its oil and postpartum products. This certification reflects compliance with high manufacturing standards and the company's commitment to implementing safety and quality standards set by the government.

In the same year, the company's founder, Tuan Haji Khalid bin Uda Ismail, passed away. His passing left a deep impact on his family, friends, and the community. Although his loss left a large void in the company's leadership, the company continues to honor his legacy and strives to maintain operations with the spirit and values he instilled.

Takeover by Tuan Haji Ahmad Zakaria

In 1996, the management of Syarikat Minyak Afiat Sdn. Bhd. was taken over by Tuan Haji Ahmad Zakaria bin Haji Khalid following the death of his father, Tuan Haji Khalid bin Uda Ismail. The purpose of this takeover was to continue the family's legacy and vision.

In the same year, the company established collaborations with Universiti Sains Malaysia in traditional medicine manufacturing technology and the Malaysian Association of Traditional Malay Medicine Manufacturers (PURBATAMA) to expand its network, improve product quality, and contribute to the advancement of the traditional medicine industry in Malaysia.

Launch of Minyak Hangat Afiat

In 1998, the company introduced Minyak Hangat Afiat as a new product. The launch of this product reflected the company's efforts to expand its product range to meet market demand. This product demonstrates the company's innovation and concern for product diversity, with the aim of providing added value and a refreshing warming effect to customers.

Introduction of Set Toharah Afiat and Jus Halia Bermadu

In 2004, Syarikat Minyak Afiat introduced the Set Toharah Afiat, which includes lemongrass shampoo, lemongrass soap, and feminine care products, through a collaboration with SIRIM to ensure high quality standards. This move marked the company's effort to expand its product range in the personal care category.

Later, in 2010, the company continued to expand their product offerings by launching Jus Halia Bermadu (Honey Ginger Juice), adding more variety and choices for their customers to this day.

Conclusion

Syarikat Minyak Afiat Sdn. Bhd. has gone through a long and challenging journey since its establishment in 1924. With a spirit of innovation and a commitment to quality, the company has successfully maintained its position as one of the leading brands in the Malaysian traditional medicine industry.

The legacy left by its founders, Tuan Haji Panjang Kamaruddin and Tuan Haji Khalid bin Uda Ismail, continues to live on through the high-quality products produced by this company. Minyak Afiat is not just a brand, but a symbol of heritage, tradition, and excellence in Malay medicine, and it has become a product of pride for the people of Perak.
