Kuala Kangsar, the Royal Town of Perak

The origin of the name Kuala Kangsar is derived from the counting of river mouths (kuala) along the Perak River when the area was first explored. It is said that a group of explorers traveled along the Perak River to find a suitable bank to land. The story goes that they rowed their sampans along the Perak River in search of a settlement area until they reached a tributary on the left bank of the Perak River. In their count, this river mouth was the hundredth minus one, or in Malay, 'Kuala Kurang Sa'. It is believed that this is how Kuala Kangsar got its name, which was originally 'Kuala Kurang Sa' and later evolved into 'Kuala Kangsar' over time. Some locals also claim that the name Kuala Kangsar was taken from the 'kangsar' trees that grew abundantly along the riverbanks.
