History of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Anderson Ipoh

The history of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Anderson Ipoh. Anderson School, one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in Malaysia, is located in the city of Ipoh, Perak. The school has produced many famous and successful figures in various fields, making it one of the best secondary schools in the country.

Its establishment began in the early 20th century, primarily focused on providing education to the children of leaders or dignitaries in Malaya at that time. This was because it was created to provide opportunities for Malay students who did not have the chance to attend the Malay College Kuala Kangsar.

It also became an option for Malay parents who did not want to send their children to Anglo-Chinese schools like St. Michael's Institution, which was one of the two prominent Christian missionary schools in Ipoh.

Anderson School was established in 1909 by the British government under the administration of the Federated Malay States. The school was named after Sir John Anderson, Governor of the Straits Settlements (1904-1911), who was also a key figure in the development of education in Malaya. Initially, the school was known as "Anderson School" and operated in a temporary building on Jalan Belfield, Ipoh.

The increase in student numbers forced the school to temporarily use additional buildings at the Masonic Hall (now the Perak State Education Department building) on Jalan Maxwell (Jalan Tun Abdul Razak) in 1919. Finally, in 1931, the new Anderson School building on Jalan Ashby (Jalan Hospital) was completed and opened. The original school building was designed in the British colonial architectural style, which still retains its historical features despite undergoing several renovations.

However, in 2025, the old Anderson School building underwent a massive renovation process where the main structure of the building was demolished, and only the facade was preserved.

At the beginning of its establishment, Lt. Col. J.H. Tyte, who was the Deputy Principal of Victoria Institution Kuala Lumpur, was appointed as the first Principal of Anderson School. He was assisted by Mr. E.C. Smith, who served as the Deputy Principal.

Anderson School is famous for its academic and co-curricular excellence. Since its inception, the school has produced many students who have succeeded in various fields, including politics, business, sports, and the arts. The school is also known for its tradition of excellence in sports, particularly in hockey, rugby, and athletics.

In 2009, the school celebrated its 100th anniversary with a celebration officiated by Sultan Azlan Shah, the Sultan of Perak at that time. Later, the school also held programs such as the 100-year Sports Carnival and the 100th Athletics Championship. A Fun Ride event and a Charity Dinner were also held on July 7 and 8, 2018.
