Form Six Student Fined RM5,000 for Insulting the Sultan of Perak

A Form Six student was fined RM5,000 after pleading guilty at the Ipoh Magistrate's Court for posting a status on their personal Twitter account insulting the Sultan of Perak, which sparked public outrage.

The student faces three months in prison if they fail to pay the fine. According to the charge sheet, the accused posted offensive comments with the intent to hurt the feelings of others.

The accused was also asked by the magistrate to recite the Rukun Negara, after which the student was given an explanation regarding the fifth principle of the Rukun Negara, which is Courtesy and Morality. Courtesy and Morality are the most important elements in shaping an individual's character.

What we can see today is that courtesy and morality in our society are fading. It is possible that factors such as a lack of religious education, upbringing, and a disregard for the law cause an individual to act without thinking, as the student did.

Hopefully, this incident serves as a lesson to everyone to maintain good manners and use polite, filtered language—not only on social media but at all times when interacting with others, regardless of their rank, status, or age.
