5 Tragic Events Related to Perak Before the Nation's Independence

The earliest British settlement in Malaysia began with the occupation of Pulau Balambangan in 1769, following an agreement with the Sultanates of Brunei and Sulu.

Meanwhile, the British Straits Settlements were established in 1826, and Britain gradually expanded its influence and control over the entire peninsula. The Straits Settlements included Penang, Singapore, and Melaka. In 1867, the British became increasingly aggressive and began acquiring other Malay states. Due to civil wars and disturbances by Chinese secret societies, Britain was chosen to resolve the problems of the Straits Settlements' residents. Eventually, the Pangkor Treaty was signed, which resulted in the expansion of British power into the Malay states (namely Perak, Pahang, Selangor, and Negeri Sembilan, also known as the Federated Malay States). Behind the struggles of a multi-ethnic society, especially the Malay majority, in defending Tanah Melayu from colonial enemies, there are clearly untold tragic stories hidden from our current generation. As a result, we can see today that the current generation does not appreciate the independence that was hard-won by our ancestors.

The Story of Taiping-born Soldiers Executed by the Japanese

- Before being executed by a firing squad, they were made prisoners of war following the surrender of the British army on February 15, 1942. The Japanese army gave everyone in detention a choice, providing them with fourteen days or two weeks to think and make a decision. The three choices were: to remove their military uniforms and return to their villages to become ordinary civilians, to join the Japanese army, or the final option, to remain in uniform and continue to resist the Japanese army.

- A member of the Perak royalty who was captured was once offered freedom by the Japanese, but he rejected the offer when he realized that he alone was being offered release from the detention center while the others were not. He later stated that it was God's will if he were to be released, and it was also God's will if he and his fellow comrades were to die together.

- Around the 1950s, the Penghulu of Slim Village in Perak, named Penghulu Abdul Rahman Satri, was captured by communist forces. According to the victim's wife, Som Binti Ibrahim, to her family, the Penghulu was captured by communists inside the Slim Village Mosque immediately after performing Friday prayers during the month of Ramadan. - He was severely and cruelly tortured by the Japanese army during interrogation because Lim Bo Seng refused to reveal the names of those working with him to the Japanese.
