Complete Guide on How to Pray (Solat)

The five daily obligatory prayers are a duty upon every Muslim who has reached puberty and is of sound mind. This guide covers the conditions, a step-by-step method, actions that invalidate the prayer, and the times when voluntary prayer is discouraged — as a general reference following the Shafi‘i school practised in Malaysia.

Conditions That Make Prayer Obligatory

  • Being a Muslim
  • Having reached puberty
  • Being of sound mind
  • Being free from menstruation and post-natal bleeding
  • Having received the message of Islam

Conditions for a Valid Prayer

  • Purity from minor and major ritual impurity
  • Cleanliness of body, clothing and place from impurities
  • Covering the ‘awrah
  • Facing the qibla
  • The prayer time having entered
  • Knowing the obligation of the prayer
  • Avoiding anything that invalidates the prayer

Step-by-Step Method of Prayer

  1. 1
    Intention (Niat)
Form the intention in the heart to perform the specific obligatory prayer, together with the opening takbir.
  2. 2
    Opening Takbir
Raise both hands to shoulder or ear level while saying “Allahu Akbar”.
  3. 3
    Opening Supplication (sunnah)
Recite the opening supplication after the takbir, before Al-Fatihah.
  4. 4
    Reciting Al-Fatihah
Recite Surah Al-Fatihah in every rak‘ah — it is a pillar of the prayer.
  5. 5
    Reciting a Surah (sunnah)
Recite any surah or verses of the Quran in the first and second rak‘ah.
  6. 6
    Bowing (Rukuk)
Bow with stillness while glorifying “Subhana Rabbiyal ‘Azim wa bihamdih”.
  7. 7
    Rising (Iktidal)
Rise back to a standing position from bowing, with stillness.
  8. 8
    First Prostration
Prostrate with the forehead, nose, both palms, both knees and the toes touching the ground while glorifying Allah.
  9. 9
    Sitting Between Prostrations
Sit briefly with stillness while reciting “Rabbighfirli…”.
  10. 10
    Second Prostration
Prostrate again with stillness as in the first prostration.
  11. 11
    First Tashahhud
For three or four rak‘ah prayers, sit and recite the first tashahhud after the second rak‘ah.
  12. 12
    Final Tashahhud
Sit and recite the final tashahhud and the blessings upon the Prophet (PBUH) in the last rak‘ah.
  13. 13
    Salam
Give salam to the right and left by saying “Assalamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah”.

Actions That Invalidate the Prayer

  • Occurrence of minor or major ritual impurity
  • Contact with impurity that is not excused
  • Deliberately exposing the ‘awrah
  • Speaking deliberately other than the prayer recitation
  • Excessive consecutive movement (three times) unrelated to the prayer
  • Eating or drinking
  • Intending to exit the prayer or doubting the intention
  • Turning the back to the qibla
  • Laughing out loud

Times When Voluntary Prayer Is Discouraged

There are certain times when performing absolute voluntary prayer is discouraged:

  • After the Fajr prayer until sunrise
  • While the sun is rising until it is a spear’s length high
  • When the sun is directly overhead until it declines
  • After the Asr prayer until sunset
  • While the sun is setting until it has fully set
