Tragedy: Three Workers Drown in Sewer Pit in Lenggong
Lenggong, Perak – A heartbreaking incident occurred this morning when three workers died from drowning while performing cleaning work inside a sewer pit at a luxury resort construction site in Kampung Ibol, Sumpitan, near here. The victims consisted of two locals aged 29 and 37, and one Indonesian national.
According to an official statement from the Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), a rescue operation was launched immediately after receiving an emergency call at 10:08 a.m. The rescue team from the Lenggong Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene – located approximately 17 kilometers from the station – in a short time to carry out the rescue mission.
"Unfortunately, both local workers were confirmed dead at the scene due to drowning. Meanwhile, their colleague, the Indonesian national, was rushed to Gerik Hospital before being pronounced dead by the attending doctor," explained Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, Assistant Director of the Operations Division of JBPM Perak.
It is understood that the victims were performing routine cleaning work on the sewer system at the resort construction site when the incident occurred. Authorities are currently conducting a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including the possibility of hazardous gas leaks or failure of safety procedures.
This incident raises questions regarding the level of compliance with safety procedures at construction sites, especially when performing high-risk work in confined spaces. JBPM reminds all contractors to strictly adhere to safety guidelines to prevent unwanted tragedies.
In the same incident, five other workers who were also trapped were successfully rescued by members of the public and taken for treatment at a nearby health clinic.
The bodies of all the victims have been sent to a nearby hospital for post-mortem examinations. The victims' families are being contacted for further arrangements.
