Tiger Attacks Cattle in Gerik; Perhilitan Advises Residents to Stay Vigilant
The Perak Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) is urging residents in Kampung Padang Langgar, Gerik, not to let their livestock roam freely following a tiger attack on May 17.
According to Perak Perhilitan Director Yusoff Shariff, livestock enclosures must be built sturdily and appropriately to reduce the risk of attacks by the predatory mammal.
"Residents must keep their livestock in proper enclosures, rather than building them haphazardly or just for the sake of it. This step is crucial to prevent their animals from becoming prey to wild beasts," Yusoff emphasized when contacted by Bernama today.
The latest incident involved four cows belonging to residents that were attacked by a tiger, believed to have come from the forest near the village.
So far, there are no signs of the tiger returning to the village area, although Perhilitan has installed traps and is using drone technology to track its movements.
"We are still monitoring, but so far there are no tracks or sightings of the tiger. One of the factors driving these animals to approach residential areas is the decline in the wild boar population, which is their primary food source," explained Yusoff.
He hopes the tiger will return to its natural habitat to ease the concerns of local residents.
Perhilitan will continue to work with the community to ensure the safety of livestock and prevent human-wildlife conflict.
