The Tragic Story of Tycoon Foo Yet Kai from Batu Gajah

06 Mar 2019 · 2 min read · 264 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

Foo Yet Kai was a well-known and respected tycoon in Perak, especially in the Ipoh area, during his prime. The success story of the late Foo Yet Kai can serve as an inspiration to many entrepreneurs out there, showing how one can start from the bottom to achieve success.

Foo Yet Kai was born in Batu Gajah, Perak, in 1907. At the age of 3, after his father passed away, Foo Yet Kai was taken by his mother back to their ancestral village of Yunting, located in the Fujian region of China. It was in that village that the late Foo Yet Kai grew up, spending much of his life in poverty with his beloved mother. At that time, Foo Yet Kai's mother worked on a farm, and the income she earned was not enough to cover their daily expenses or buy food for their family. Poverty was not a barrier to continuing to strive and move forward. The late Foo Yet Kai stood firm in facing all the trials and challenges of life, even though their living conditions were destitute and extremely difficult. In 1924, when the late Foo Yet Kai reached the age of 18, he finally returned to Malaya and began working at a tin mine, following his uncle around Perak. Foo Yet Kai worked diligently and tirelessly to earn a living, and after years of saving money, he finally had enough to open his own tin mining company. It turned out that the late Foo Yet Kai was a man who knew how to manage money wisely, despite originally being just an ordinary worker at another company's tin mine.

Not content with just opening his tin mining company, the late Foo Yet Kai diversified his business into the agricultural and real estate sectors. All his efforts and hard work paid off with the success he achieved after becoming a famous tycoon in Ipoh, Perak. The late Foo Yet Kai also purchased the Chung Thye Phin Villa and turned it into a private hospital known as Our Lady's Hospital. The hospital was managed by the Sisters of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood from April 1964 until January 1983. Today, the original site of the hospital is known as the KMC Medical Centre, where free treatment is provided to patients whose medical costs are covered by the Foo Yet Kai Foundation. In the field of education, the late Foo Yet Kai did not miss the opportunity to donate towards the establishment of Shen Jai High School on Jalan Bendahara in 1958. The construction of the school was dedicated to the memory of his father, Foo Kan Yik, who had passed away long ago. However, at the end of his life, a very tragic incident occurred. The late Foo Yet Kai was shot dead by robbers who were robbing his home in 1961. His killer, a Chinese man from Melaka, was sentenced to death by hanging.

A street next to The Store shopping centre in Ipoh has been named after Foo Yet Kai in his memory. Foo Yet Kai remains well-known and will always be remembered as a generous individual who always looked after the welfare of others.
