Kopi O or black coffee is arguably a favorite drink for everyone in Malaysia. Its main ingredients are coffee beans, and the mixture is quite different from the branded coffee sold in modern cafes and kopitiams. Furthermore, its deep black color sets it apart from the coffee sold in expensive, branded cafes.
This time, we will share with our loyal readers of orangperak.com the history of the most popular and beloved coffee in Taiping. Those living in Taiping may already be aware of its existence, but many others in the state of Perak still do not know about this coffee. The story of this highly sought-after coffee in Taiping is fascinating. The coffee factory is located in the Taiping district, and interestingly, it is identified as one of the pioneering coffee factories in our country. Amazingly, it is still in operation to this day.
Kopi Antong Cafe
For the local residents of Taiping, this coffee is known as Kopi Aun Tong. Everything began in 1933, founded by the late Mr. Tiah along with his friend, a Malay man named Ahmad. Initially, Mr. Tiah opened a coffee shop selling his own homemade coffee, and amazingly, it became a local sensation at the time.
The demand was beyond expectations! Many customers preferred to come to his shop to buy the blended coffee powder he made rather than just drinking it there. Because of this, Mr. Tiah decided to open a coffee factory in Assam Kumbang.
With Ahmad's creativity, the two of them designed a conveyor line system in the factory using only a single electric motor. For the information of our loyal readers at orangperak.com, the electric motor used back then is said to still exist and function to this day.
Mr. Tiah created the original Kopi O recipe using local coffee beans sourced from Banting, Selangor. These beans were then processed and mixed with a little sugar and several secret ingredients to complete their signature coffee recipe. Thus, the perfect Kopi O blend was created. After Mr. Tiah passed away, the coffee factory was inherited by his son. Today, the Aun Tong coffee factory is managed by his grandson, Mr. Tian. Currently, the coffee beans used are still sourced from Banting, now blended with other types of coffee beans imported from Brazil and Indonesia.
For the information of our loyal readers at orangperak.com, the coffee factory now not only produces the original Kopi O blend but also manufactures several other products such as 3-in-1 Kopi O premix, 3-in-1 white coffee premix, durian coffee, and much more. For your information, the owner of this coffee factory has also rebranded their coffee products under the name Kopi Antong.
