Kota Ngah Ibrahim was built in Matang in 1854. The fort features stone walls measuring 131 meters long and 110 meters wide. This historic site is located approximately 8 km from the town of Taiping. Within the fort's grounds, Ngah Ibrahim built a large house that served as his official residence. A warehouse building was used to store tin ore. After Ngah Ibrahim was exiled, Kota Ngah Ibrahim was taken over by the British. It was used as the official residence of Captain Tristam Speedy, the Assistant Resident, and also served as a courthouse for the trial of Datuk Maharajalela and Datuk Sagor for the murder of the first British Resident in Perak, J.W.W. Birch. They were found guilty and executed by hanging in front of Kota Ngah Ibrahim on January 21, 1877. In 1913, the Kota Ngah Ibrahim building was used as a Malay teacher training college known as Matang College until the opening of the Sultan Idris Training College in 1923. The building was later used as the Matang National Primary School. During the Japanese Occupation, it served as the headquarters for the Japanese military.
