The Meaningful Message of Raja Idris Shah at Masjid Ridzuaniah on 9 January 1935
On a bright Friday morning, 9 January 1935, the atmosphere in Kuala Kangsar was brightened by the arrival of His Royal Highness the Raja Di Hilir Perak, Raja Idris Shah Ibni Sultan Iskandar Shah. His Highness arrived at Masjid Ridzuaniah to perform Friday prayers in congregation, accompanied by several state dignitaries. This event was not merely a religious routine, but a historic moment that left a profound impact on the people of Perak.
After completing the prayers, Raja Idris Shah, who was only about ten years old at the time, took the opportunity to deliver a brief yet meaningful speech from the mosque's pulpit. His speech, though short, reflected a maturity and wisdom extraordinary for a young boy. He urged the people to be diligent in seeking knowledge and performing acts of worship, including observing the five daily prayers and congregational prayers.
“Gentlemen, let us strive earnestly to please our God and our King, by seeking knowledge and performing acts of worship such as the five daily prayers, congregational prayers, and others.
Let us strive earnestly so as not to incur the wrath of our God and our King, for whoever is cursed by their God will surely end up in Hell, and whoever is cursed by their King, there is no use in living in this land.” he advised with great wisdom.
Raja Idris Shah also humbly stated, “I am still a foolish boy, but whatever I hear and whatever I see, I will report to my father (Sultan Iskandar Shah); my only prayer is for the long life of all the people of Perak.”
His speech, filled with noble values and valuable advice, left a deep impression on all who were present. The people who heard the speech could feel the high moral character and personality of Raja Idris Shah, who, despite being young, already displayed great leadership qualities. He was seen as a leader who would bring success and prosperity to the state of Perak.
This event not only illustrated the devotion of a young prince to his religion but also demonstrated the importance of a leader's role in guiding the people toward goodness. Raja Idris Shah, who later became the 33rd Sultan of Perak, was known as a just, wise leader who cared deeply for the welfare of his people.
His speech at Masjid Ridzuaniah that day serves as early evidence of the great responsibility borne by a leader from a young age.
Masjid Ridzuaniah, which served as the backdrop for this historic event, is among the oldest and most respected mosques in Perak. Built in 1916, this mosque is not only a center for worship but also a symbol of unity and the strength of the Muslim community in the state. The presence of Raja Idris Shah that day further added to the historical value of the mosque.
This speech on 9 January 1935 reminds us of the importance of leadership values, religious devotion, and humility in a leader. Raja Idris Shah's brief yet meaningful message remains relevant to this day, serving as a guide not only for the people of Perak but for all generations in pursuing excellence in this world and the hereafter.
