The Last Descendant of the Sultan of Perak and the Male Lineage of the Kings of Melaka

03 Apr 2019 · 2 min read · 38 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar
While in Aceh, it is said that the Sultan was critically ill after unknowingly contracting cholera. Eventually, the 9th Sultan of Perak passed away on Acehnese soil. Thus, the male lineage of the Sultans of Perak and the Kings of Melaka came to an end.

The Melaka Sultanate was founded by a royal prince from Palembang named Parameswara between 1400 and 1403. Originally, the state of Melaka was not an Islamic kingdom.

However, this changed in 1409 when the ruling king, Parameswara, married a princess from Pasai, and subsequently, Islam was established as the official religion of the Melaka Sultanate by Sultan Muzaffar Syah. In 1526, the Melaka kingdom fell after being attacked by the Portuguese. The Sultan of Melaka at that time, Sultan Mahmud Shah, fled to Kampar, Sumatra. His son, Tengku Alauddin Shah, remained and developed the state of Johor into a powerful empire that reached its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Another son of Sultan Mahmud Shah, Tengku Muzaffar Shah, was invited by the people of the north to become sultan, and that was the beginning of the Perak Sultanate.

Returning to the original story, who was the last descendant of the Sultan of Perak and the male lineage of the Kings of Melaka? It was none other than the late Sultan Sallehuddin (the 9th Sultan of Perak). The late Sultan Sallehuddin (the 9th Sultan of Perak), who ruled Perak from 1630 to 1636, was the son of the late Sultan Mahmud Shah I (the 8th Sultan of Perak). As fate would have it, during his reign, the state of Perak was struck by a cholera epidemic. Consequently, he was forced to flee to Aceh.

After the death of Sultan Sallehuddin, Sultan Mudzaffar Shah II became the 10th Sultan of Perak and reigned from 1636 to 1653. Sultan Mudzaffar Shah II was the son of Raja Mahmud (Sultan Ahmad Shah II) ibni Raja Kasab @ Ali Al-Ajali from Siak & Johor and Tun Kechil, daughter of Tun Isap Misai, the Bendahara Seri Maharaja of Johor.

Sultan Mudzaffar Shah II was appointed by the Sultan of the Aceh Darussalam Kingdom, Sultan Iskandar Thani, as the Sultan of Perak, as at that time, the state of Perak was under the conquest of the Aceh Kingdom.
