The History of UniKL RCMP: The Only Royal-Status College in Perak

28 Aug 2025 · 4 min read · 3,018 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

Universiti Kuala Lumpur Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKL RCMP) is a highly significant medical education institution in the state of Perak. It is not only a premier academic center but also the only higher education institution in the state to be awarded "Royal" status. Its establishment was the result of the Sultan of Perak's vision and deep commitment to the advancement of education, particularly in the field of medicine.

Background and Early Establishment

The inspiration for the establishment of RCMP began with the late Sultan Azlan Shah, the Sultan of Perak at the time, who emphasized the importance of higher education as a driver for the state's progress. He saw an urgent need to produce more local medical professionals and reduce reliance on overseas institutions. Thus, the effort to establish a prestigious medical college in Perak was born.

With the support of the state government and collaboration with the private sector, the Royal College of Medicine Perak began operations on October 1, 1999. It started as a small private college with only 28 students and seven faculty members. However, the grand ambition behind it was to make this institution a catalyst for human capital development in the health sector.

The moral and institutional support from the Sultan of Perak not only strengthened the spirit of its establishment but also became the foundation for the special recognition received later. The name "Royal" in the college's identity reflects the close relationship between this institution and the palace.

Transition to UniKL and Academic Development

In 2005, RCMP was officially absorbed into Universiti Kuala Lumpur and renamed UniKL RCMP. This merger opened a new chapter in the institution's academic development, including the expansion of programs and infrastructure upgrades.

After becoming part of UniKL, the institution began offering various health programs covering medicine, pharmacy, nursing, laboratory technology, and others. The MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) program remains the core program and primary focus.

Today, UniKL RCMP has over 3,600 active students and offers more than 17 academic programs from foundation to PhD levels. The addition of academic staff and significant investment in curriculum development have made it a competitive health education center in Malaysia.

Royal Status and Recognition

The "Royal" status awarded to RCMP is a rarity in the history of higher education institutions in the country. It was granted in recognition of the vital role played by this institution in advancing medical education and as a tribute to the initiative of the Sultan of Perak.

The late Sultan Azlan Shah not only acted as the patron of this institution but was also the primary inspiration behind its founding. His active role in promoting education and shaping the development policies of RCMP makes the Royal status highly significant and well-deserved.

With this status, UniKL RCMP is not only recognized among educational institutions in Perak but is also known at the national level as a symbol of excellence and commitment to health education.

Campus Facilities and Student Amenities

The UniKL RCMP campus is located in the heart of Greentown, Ipoh, on a six-acre site. Its buildings feature Moorish architecture, giving it a distinct identity that stands out in the city center. Its classic design provides a calm and conducive atmosphere for learning.

Key facilities include anatomy labs, clinical simulation labs, a modern library, interactive lecture halls, and a multipurpose hall. Students also enjoy recreational facilities and social spaces for relaxing and building community networks.

To accommodate the growing number of students, a 10-story building worth RM79 million was constructed in 2016. This building increased teaching space capacity and provided a better, more modern learning environment.

Clinical Training and Industry Collaboration

Clinical training is a vital part of medical education at UniKL RCMP. Students undergo practical training at government hospitals such as Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun, Hospital Taiping, and Hospital Batu Gajah. This collaboration allows students to experience real-world working conditions in the health sector.

Specialists at partner hospitals play a crucial role in guiding students and providing deep exposure to various clinical challenges. It also opens opportunities for students to build professional relationships that are useful after graduation.

In addition to clinical training, students are encouraged to participate in health awareness activities and community projects as part of the institution's social responsibility. This instills values of empathy and care among students.

Achievements and Future Direction

Since its inception, UniKL RCMP has produced thousands of graduates who now serve in various health institutions both locally and abroad. The institution also features lecturers who are listed among the world's top scientists in their respective fields.

Graduate employability rates are very encouraging. UniKL data shows that the overall employability rate for UniKL RCMP was around 96.1% for 2023 graduates. However, for the medical program (MBBS), that rate reached 100%, as graduates are directly absorbed into the Ministry of Health's training system. This demonstrates the quality of teaching and the industry's trust in the quality of UniKL RCMP's output.

Looking ahead, UniKL RCMP plans to introduce a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and intends to establish its own teaching hospital to enhance the quality of clinical training. There are also plans to expand facilities through the acquisition of existing educational premises in Greentown. This is to further strengthen RCMP's position as the premier health education hub in Malaysia.
