The History of the Perak Menteri Besar's Official Residence

28 Mar 2018 · 2 min read · 34 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar
It was originally built as a two-story wooden building with stone pillars, unlike what we see today.

As is well known, the official residence of the Perak Menteri Besar is located near the Sultan Yusuf roundabout. The house was built in 1962 and was completed in 1963.

Its location is not far from several rows of new buildings that house business centers, a five-star hotel, and the office of the Sultan of Perak. For your information, the official residence of the Perak Menteri Besar was originally developed on a three-acre plot of land even before independence. It was originally built as a two-story wooden building with stone pillars, unlike what we see today. Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Tajol Rosli bin Mohd Ghazali, the 9th Menteri Besar of Perak, once lived in the residence when his father, Tan Sri Haji Mohamed Ghazali bin Haji Jawi, served as the 2nd Menteri Besar of Perak, appointed on August 1, 1957. In 1967, the official residence of the Perak Menteri Besar was demolished when Dato’ Seri Ahmad Said took over as the 4th Menteri Besar of Perak, until it was given a new lease on life when Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Diraja (Dr) Haji Ramli bin Ngah Talib became the 8th Menteri Besar of Perak.

When Tan Sri Haji Mohamed Ghazali bin Haji Jawi was the Menteri Besar of Perak, there were 128 rambutan trees around the official residence. The number decreased when Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Tajol Rosli bin Mohd Ghazali became the Menteri Besar of Perak in 1999.

The 8th Menteri Besar of Perak, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Diraja (Dr) Haji Ramli bin Ngah Talib, strongly encouraged the planting of exotic papaya trees around the Perak Menteri Besar's residence to replace the rambutan trees, and photos of him picking papayas were widely published in newspapers some time ago.
