The History of Kuala Kangsar, Perak

04 Mar 2019 · 2 min read · 279 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

The state of Perak was born from the waters of the Perak River, from its source in Ulu Belum to its estuary in the Strait of Malacca. Since ancient times, people have been drawn to the unique qualities of the Perak River, traveling upstream in search of suitable banks to land.

They were pioneers who came to open up new settlements and interacted with the indigenous people, eventually becoming the Perakians we know today. They paddled their sampans upstream until they reached a tributary on the left bank of the Perak River. In their estimation, this river mouth was auspicious, especially with its low banks, fertile soil, and beautiful scenery. Coincidentally, according to their count, this was the ninety-ninth river mouth, or 'Kuala Kurang Sa'. It is said that this was its original name, "Kuala Kurang Sa," which later became known simply as "Kuala Kangsar." However, another version suggests it was named after the 'kangsar' trees that grew abundantly along the riverbanks.

On land, one could continue the journey along the river until spotting Gunung Pondok in Padang Rengas, a landmark that guided travelers to or from Larut.
