The history of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun began in 1891 as a District Hospital known as Ipoh Hospital, with a capacity of only 50 beds. Then, the hospital was upgraded to a State Hospital in 1942. The 8-storey main building was completed in 1980. Other developments include the Specialist Clinic Complex (1992) and the Daily Treatment Complex (2005). On Thursday, June 12, 2008, the hospital's name was changed from Ipoh Hospital to Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun. Currently, Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun is the third-largest Ministry of Health Malaysia hospital in the country after Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Pulau Pinang, with a capacity of 990 beds, 16 operating theatres, 16 adult intensive care unit beds, 8 cardiac care unit beds, 17 paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) beds, and 20 neonatal intensive care unit beds.
