The 1993 Old Mine Collapse in Pantai Remis
Pantai Remis is a coastal town in the Manjung district of Perak. It gets its name from the 'remis' (clams) found in abundance along its shores. Remis is a type of shelled mollusk that lives in sandy coastal areas; they are edible and very delicious! Fresh sea fish are easily available in Pantai Remis as local fishermen are constantly heading out to sea to catch fish.
Returning to the original topic of this article. On October 21, 1993, an abandoned mine in Pantai Remis collapsed. This abandoned site was once a tin mine. Everyone knows that Malaysia was well-known for its tin mining industry during the colonial era. Included is amateur footage recording the collapse of the abandoned tin mine wall. The incident occurred near the sea, and its impact can now be seen as a small bay measuring approximately 500 m².
"That year, I received a call from the owner of the tin mine. He said that his mine, which had been operated for decades, was going to collapse. I rushed to the scene with my video camera and waited for several hours. Finally, I captured this valuable footage. Although this film only lasts a few minutes, it is quite exciting. I hope this video makes you all appreciate the consequences of destroying our environment," said the videographer. No deaths, injuries, or accidents were reported because everyone was alert and already aware that the mine wall was going to collapse. Everyone is urged to look after their respective environments to prevent similar disasters from happening again. Such things can be changed if everyone is committed to participating and working together to protect our areas for our children and grandchildren to live on the same land we walk on today.
