Teluk Intan & Kampung Baru History Talk: UiTM Perak Unearths Local Cultural Heritage
The “Talk: Exploring the History of Teluk Intan & the Formation of Kampung Baru” program took place at Studio AP025-AP030, UiTM Seri Iskandar, Perak on June 15, 2025. This event was an initiative by 5th-semester students from the Landscape Architecture Program, Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying (FSPU), and was successfully conducted in an academic session.
With the objective of tracing the historical roots of Teluk Intan town and the Kampung Baru concept, this program served as an excellent platform to reintroduce local historical narratives to the community. It opened up space for open discussion regarding the formation of community identity and the historical impact on modern society.
Knowledge Sharing by the Orang Perak Team
Special guest panelists from Orang Perak brought a fresh perspective to the session. Founder Freddie Aziz Jasbindar, along with fellow panelists Iskandar Zulqarnain bin Zaheruddin and Saiful Reza bin Mohd Razali, shared various perspectives based on their experience in documenting the state's history.
They emphasized that it is important for the local community, especially the younger generation, to understand history as the foundation of identity. Their sharing was not limited to historical facts but was strengthened by cultural narratives, oral stories, and the importance of historical documentation through digital media such as blogs and videos.
Insights on Cultural and Social Heritage
Among the important issues raised was how cultural heritage in Teluk Intan, including traditional structures, community practices, and historical narratives, must be preserved so as not to be lost to time. The discussion also touched on the impact of colonialism, independence, and the role of local residents as a site of unity and the preservation of Malay culture.
Emphasis was also placed on the importance of heritage preservation as a basis for future development. History is not just an old story, but a treasure that shapes the values and norms of society. Dynamic Interaction and Overwhelming Response
The session, which was supposed to end at 12:00 PM, was extended into the early afternoon due to the participants' enthusiasm in following the discussion and voicing their views. This shows how great the community's interest in history is when it is presented in an engaging and relevant way to the current context.
The program participants consisted entirely of UiTM Seri Iskandar students, specifically from the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying. Although it only involved students, the response was extraordinary, with active involvement in the Q&A sessions and discussions throughout the program.
This shows that when history is discussed with a relevant approach that is close to the community, it can spark deep interest among the younger generation. The high student involvement in this program proves that cultural heritage and history still have a place in the hearts of young people when presented in an interesting way.

This program once again strengthens the role of UiTM Seri Iskandar as an educational center that not only focuses on academic theory but also functions as an intellectual platform that elevates local historical and cultural values. The organization of this program is proof that a campus can be a bridge between knowledge and the community.
The Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying and its students successfully utilized creativity and a structured approach to bring history to life for the community. By giving space to community voices like Orang Perak, this institution has answered the call to dignify local knowledge within the framework of national development.
Hopes and the Future of Perak's Heritage
Programs like this should be continued consistently because they not only elevate local historical values but also open space for young people to better appreciate the cultural heritage that shapes their identity. Involving students in such programs is a wise step to bring young people closer to the reality of the state's history, which may have previously only been known through textbooks.
History education should not be limited to the classroom. It needs to be brought out into social spaces so that students can see for themselves the connection between history and modern life and build an emotional connection with their state's identity. The application of these heritage values will be more effective when delivered in the form of real experiences, through discourse, exhibitions, or sharing sessions like the one conducted in this program.
