Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin Passes Away
Legendary Malay film artist, Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin, passed away this evening at a clinic in Kuala Lumpur, believed to be due to choking on a snack at his residence earlier today. The news was confirmed by his second son, Putera Hang Jebat, who stated that his father passed away at the clinic at 5:45 PM.
Tan Sri Mohamed Zain bin Shamsuddin, better known as Jins Shamsuddin, was born in Taiping, Perak on November 5, 1935. He was a contemporary of national film legends such as Tan Sri P. Ramlee and acted in several films directed by him. He first became a lead actor in the P. Ramlee-directed film 'Pancha Delima' in 1957. Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin was also the first actor to serve as a senator in the Dewan Negara for two consecutive terms.
Jins Shamsuddin rose to fame when he played the character Jefri Zain, which was similar to the world-famous spy James Bond. He was known as a very patriotic person who loved his country. In 1981, Jins Shamsuddin collaborated with the Royal Malaysia Police to produce and direct Malaysia's famous patriotic film, 'Bukit Kepong'. The film tells the story of the incident at Bukit Kepong, where police forces fought against the Malayan Communist Party during the Emergency era. The film was a box office success, grossing RM1.7 million and winning eight awards at the third Malaysia Film Festival, including the Best Film category. Tan Sri Jins Shamsuddin also once had a dream of producing a film highlighting the heroism of the Malay people of Perak against the British army during the Perak War, but it was never realized. He married actress Rahmah Rahmat in Singapore in 1961 and they were blessed with a son named Jefri Jins. This marriage did not last long, and they eventually divorced in 1963. Ten years later, in 1973, he married Halijah Abdullah and was blessed with two sons, Putera Hang Jebat and Putera Hang Nadim. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2011.
