Taiping Indian Mosque Built to Commemorate a Saint
Located at the junction of Jalan Kota and Jalan Taming Sari, this mosque was built specifically for the Indian-Muslim community who migrated to the Larut District as traders.
This mosque was originally a wooden madrasa (dargah) in 1910, built to commemorate a saint and named Masjid India Mohamed Hanafi. The mosque is situated on a main road in Taiping, at the busy Jalan Kota traffic light junction. It is also located quite close to the Old Mosque of Taiping, just about 400 meters away.
For the readers of orangperak.com, the site for this mosque was obtained through a written agreement on July 7, 1908, between E.L. Brockman, the Acting British Resident representing the Perak State Government, and the mosque's trustees, following the consent of the Sultan of Perak at that time.
The foundation stone for this more modern mosque structure was laid by the 4th Menteri Besar of Perak, Y.A.B. Dato Hj. Ahmad Said, in 1969, and the mosque's name was changed to Masjid India.
The inauguration of this mosque was performed by the 33rd Sultan of Perak, DYMM Sultan Idris Al-Mutawakkil Alallahi Shah, on July 1, 1973.
