Perak to Develop Rare Earth Industry in Collaboration with France
Perak is intensifying efforts to develop the rare earth element (REE) mineral industry by forging strategic partnerships with international industry players, including leading European companies such as Solvay in France.
During a recent work visit led by Perak Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, the state delegation had the opportunity to tour Solvay's high-tech REE processing facility in La Rochelle, France, last Tuesday. The plant is one of the most important REE processing centers in Europe, with the capability to separate all rare earth mineral elements, including heavy rare earth elements (HREE).
This visit was not just an exploration of investment opportunities, but also provided comprehensive exposure to Solvay's sophisticated operations and the potential for future collaborations that Perak could leverage.
Perak as a Leader in the REE Value Chain
Saarani emphasized that as a pioneer state in REE mining in Malaysia, Perak is committed to developing the entire value chain of the industry.
“The State Government intends to be directly involved in this midstream industry in collaboration with international companies to advance existing technology,” he said in a Facebook post.
He also stressed the importance of knowledge and technology transfer from foreign investors to the local workforce to ensure the sustainability of the REE industry in Perak.
Solvay Opens Doors for Technology Collaboration
The Perak delegation, which also included State Financial Officer Datuk Mohd Zaki Mahyudin, MB Inc. Chief Executive Officer Datuk Anuar Zainal Abidin, and representatives from Malaco Mining Sdn. Bhd., was warmly welcomed by Solvay's top management.
They were given a detailed briefing on Solvay's high-tech operations, which comply with European Union sustainability standards. According to Saarani, Solvay has expressed interest in exploring collaboration with Perak, particularly in the aspect of technology transfer.
“This is a significant step in driving the state's mineral industry to a higher level, while providing great benefits to the people of Perak,” he said.
With this strategic relationship, Perak is expected to strengthen its position as a sustainable and competitive REE hub on the global stage.
