That location is not only a dark chapter in his life but also in the nation's history! The dark memories of what happened there kept the retired Lieutenant General haunted by the events that took place on that Kuala Kangsar soil. On March 15, 2011, about 10 years after the incident, Dato Seri Zaini Mohd Said finally set foot on Bukit Jenalik once again.
Do you, as loyal readers of orangperak.com, know what happened at Bukit Jenalik in 2000? This is the story of the former Army Field Commander at the time, who etched his name as a hero in an event that shocked the nation.
What happened on Bukit Jenalik, Kuala Kangsar in 2000 was when Dato Seri Zaini Mohd Said struggled with and defeated a dangerous man named Mohd Amin Mohd Razali, the leader of Al-Ma'unah who had fortified himself at Bukit Jenalik.
The Al-Ma'unah group had stolen 105 automatic weapons and over 5,000 rounds of ammunition from the 304th Territorial Army Battalion Camp in Gerik, four days before the struggle described here took place.
Following the robbery, and as is well known, Al-Ma'unah intended to use the stolen weapons to incite chaos and overthrow the existing government. They then fortified themselves at Bukit Jenalik as a preliminary preparation.
The betrayal by Mohd Amin and the Al-Ma'unah group prompted Zaini to step forward and immediately risk his own life to confront them and resolve the issue.
In a dramatic one-minute struggle with Mohd Amin, who was armed with an M203 grenade launcher, the man was finally subdued. Zaini's success, backed by his commando training, effectively ended the security crisis as well as the four-day operation by police and military forces on the hill and its surrounding areas.
