Giant Softshell Turtle in Kampung Sungai Terap, Batu Gajah

Softshell turtles are reptiles, similar to turtles and tortoises, capable of living in both water and on riverbanks. Members of this family are found in many parts of Africa, Asia, North America, and Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. Softshell turtles have long been a favorite food for some members of the Dayak and Chinese communities.

Recently, firefighters successfully rescued a giant softshell turtle weighing up to 80 kilograms. It is believed the turtle fell into a drain and became stuck due to its massive size, which hindered its movement. The giant turtle was found in Kampung Sungai Terap, located in Batu Gajah.

Firefighters were contacted and notified by residents about the giant turtle at approximately 10 a.m. The unfortunate giant turtle had fallen and become trapped in a drain that was 0.6 meters deep. Due to its massive size and weight, five to eight firefighters had to work together to lift the turtle out of the drain using ropes. It took the firefighters about 30 minutes to lift the turtle. The giant creature was handed over to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) for further action and will be released back into its natural habitat.
