The Bukit Merah Dam in Perak is now at a critical level as water levels have dropped to approximately 6.17 meters or 20.25 feet, which is below the normal level required for paddy field irrigation. This situation has forced authorities to temporarily halt irrigation water supply to prioritize domestic water needs. This situation is expected to affect thousands of farmers who rely on water sources from the dam.

Additionally, the current water storage capacity reading is only around 8.0351 million cubic meters or 14.75%. According to a report by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS), this figure is below the safe level, confirming the dam's critical status.

Contributing Factors to the Water Crisis

The prolonged dry season is the main cause of the decline in water levels at this dam. A lack of rain in the catchment areas has resulted in insufficient reservoir replenishment. Although cloud seeding operations have been carried out, the increase in water levels has not yet reached the level required to restore paddy irrigation supply.

This situation also poses a challenge to state water resource management as they must ensure a balance between agricultural needs and the daily needs of the population.

Impact on Farmers and the Economy

The cessation of water supply to paddy fields directly affects planting activities, especially for farmers whose crops are in the critical growth phase. If this problem persists, it has the potential to reduce the state's rice production yield and subsequently affect the national rice supply.

The economic impact is not only felt by farmers, but also by suppliers of fertilizer, machinery, and agricultural labor. This situation requires immediate intervention from the authorities to mitigate losses.

Government Mitigation Efforts

To overcome this problem, authorities have conducted cloud seeding operations in the Bukit Merah Dam catchment area. As a result, there was a slight increase in water levels from 6.03 meters to 6.096 meters before reaching 6.17 meters. However, it is still not enough to end the critical status.

In addition, the state government is also considering the implementation of water transfer projects from other areas as well as stricter water conservation measures.

Hopes and Moving Forward

In facing this situation, cooperation from all parties including farmers, residents, and authorities is highly necessary. Practicing prudent water usage and continuous monitoring of dam water levels can help reduce the risk of a prolonged crisis.

If rain continues over the next few weeks, water levels have the potential to recover gradually. However, any recovery will depend on weather conditions and the effectiveness of the mitigation measures currently being implemented.

Awareness of Water Resource Management

The Bukit Merah Dam crisis serves as an important reminder of how critical water resource management is. Other states must also take precautionary measures to avoid facing a similar situation. Public education on the importance of preserving water resources needs to be strengthened.
