Batu Mestika Geliga Embun, A Perak State Regalia

07 Feb 2019 · 2 min read · 581 ·By Freddie Aziz Jasbindar

The Perak Darul Ridzuan State Regalia are the most prestigious and respected items. These items are used during the coronation ceremony of a Sultan. In other royal ceremonies or official functions, only some of these items are used and worn by His Royal Highness the Sultan and Her Royal Highness the Raja Permaisuri of Perak.

For our loyal readers of orangperak.com, the Batu Mestika Geliga Embun is one of the most important pieces of Perak state regalia used in the coronation ceremony of the Sultan of Perak, a tradition that has continued from the past until today.

If you recall, this talisman was presented by Toh Seri Nara Diraja, Mohd. Shah Nong Chik, to the 35th Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, during the Tabal Adat ceremony at the Balairong Seri of Istana Iskandariah in Kuala Kangsar.

The origin of the Batu Mestika Geliga Embun dates back to when the late Raja Mudzaffar Shah was installed as the first Sultan of Perak in 1528 at Tanah Abang, where Tok Temong was also present at the ceremony.

Tok Temong's attendance at the coronation ceremony was accompanied by 77 elephants from Hulu Perak to present the Batu Mestika Geliga Embun to the first Sultan of Perak, the late Sultan Mudzaffar Shah.

In return for the gift from Tok Temong, the late Sultan Mudzaffar Shah bestowed upon her a Puan Bujur (a betel nut container). However, the gift from the late Sultan Mudzaffar Shah to Tok Temong was later returned to the Sultan to be kept as part of the state regalia.

Tok Temong also requested that the Sultan allow her to continue ruling the left bank of the Perak River and asked that future generations of the Sultans of Perak limit their territory to the right bank of the Perak River.

Tok Temong's request was granted by the late Sultan Mudzaffar Shah, and this tradition was upheld until it was discontinued during the reign of the late Paduka Seri Sultan Idris Shah I (the 28th Sultan of Perak) when he built a palace on the left bank of the Perak River.

The Batu Mestika Geliga Embun manifests that the Sultan is successful and guided by Allah in carrying out a just administration, likened to dew from holy water in the night clouds. The Sultan of Perak must also be obedient to Allah and purify himself, both outwardly and inwardly.
