She was conferred the title of Raja Permaisuri of Perak on June 20, 2014, and since then, Tuanku Zara has become an inspirational icon to many, especially in the fields of education, health, and social development.
Family Background and Education
Tuanku Zara Salim is the youngest of four siblings. She is the daughter of the esteemed Datuk Salim Davidson, a prominent lawyer in Perak and Kuala Lumpur, and Datin Sharifah Azaliah Syed Omar Shahabudin. Royal blood also flows through Tuanku Zara, as she is the great-granddaughter of the 24th Sultan of Kedah, the late Sultan Hamid Halim Shah, who was also the father of Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.
Tuanku Zara's early education began at SMK Convent Ipoh, where she excelled not only in academics but was also active in sports. She frequently represented her school in squash and tennis from 1988 to 1990. Additionally, Tuanku Zara represented the state of Perak in swimming between 1981 and 1987, demonstrating her deep talent and interest in sports.
After completing her A-Levels at Prime College in 1992, Tuanku Zara pursued her studies at the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, in Chemical Engineering. She graduated with first-class honors in July 1995 and was awarded as an outstanding graduate for her final year project. An Illustrious Career in the Petroleum Industry
After completing her studies, Tuanku Zara returned to Malaysia and began working at the national petroleum company, Petronas, in December 1995. She served in the Corporate Planning division for six years and was directly involved in the development of integrated petrochemical complexes in Kertih and Kuantan. This project involved not only local companies but also leading international firms such as BP, BASF, Dow Chemicals, and Mitsubishi.
Tuanku Zara also served as a Project Analyst in the Petronas Petrochemical Business Unit and was part of the core team that developed the Petronas brand. Today, that brand has become a symbol of national pride on the global stage. Furthermore, she held the position of Product Manager at Petlin (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Petronas, DSM of the Netherlands, and Sasol of South Africa.
In 2005, Tuanku Zara was appointed as the Managing Director of Forthwave Consulting Sdn Bhd, a hydrocarbon consultancy firm. Her extensive experience in the petroleum and petrochemical industry makes Tuanku Zara a respected figure not only in royal circles but also in the corporate world.
Royal Life and Contributions to Society
Tuanku Zara Salim married His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah on May 17, 2007, at Istana Iskandariah, Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar. The royal couple is blessed with two children, YM Raja Azlan Muzaffar Shah (born March 14, 2008) and YM Raja Nazira Safya (born August 2, 2011). Her eldest child, YM Raja Azlan Muzaffar Shah, was appointed as the Raja Kechil Besar of Perak Darul Ridzuan effective June 20, 2014.
Beyond her duties as Queen, Tuanku Zara is active in various social and charitable activities. She was installed as the Chancellor of Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) on January 1, 2012, and plays a vital role in elevating the field of education in Malaysia. Additionally, Tuanku Zara is the patron of the Perak Family Health Association, the Convent Girls Alumni (COGA), and the Girl Guides Association of Perak.
In honor of her contributions, a purple hybrid orchid was named 'Dendrobium Tuanku Zara Salim' during her visit to the 7th International Orchid Festival on July 9, 2007.
