Tiger Caught in Trap in Sungai Siput
The Perak Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) successfully captured a tiger in Kampung Perlop 1 here yesterday.
According to Perak Perhilitan Director, Yusoff Shariff, the 90-kilogram male tiger, aged approximately two years, was successfully lured into a trap set about 700 meters from the village settlement at 3 a.m.
"A villager contacted us around 8 a.m. to inform us that the tiger had been trapped.
"With this success, the concerns of the local residents can be eased, allowing them to return to their daily activities with more peace of mind," he said when contacted by Bernama.
Previously, residents of Kampung Perlop 1 and surrounding areas lived in fear after the tiger was spotted roaming the area since early last year and was reported to have attacked villagers' livestock.
Tiger to be Sent to Wildlife Rescue Center
Yusoff stated that the tiger is in good health and will be relocated to the National Wildlife Rescue Center (NWRC) in Sungkai, Perak, to be used for breeding purposes to address the risk of extinction of the tiger population in this country.
"Perhilitan does not rule out the possibility of other tigers in nearby areas, including the Korbu Forest Reserve. The threat of attacks may recur given the village's proximity to the forest, in addition to the natural habit of tigers roaming far to find food," he explained.
He also expressed his gratitude for the cooperation of the villagers who assisted in the efforts to capture the tiger, which was reported to have consumed nine of the residents' livestock since early last year.
