The Story of Chong Chor, the Communist Terrorist from Tronoh
Chong Chor was a commander of the 6th Assault Unit of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) who engaged in communist terrorist activities for over 50 years. In reality, he was born in Canton, known today as Guangzhou in China. Later, Chong Chor was brought by his mother to migrate to Malaya, settling in Tronoh, Perak in 1929.

At the end of his involvement, he was arrested by the Special Branch (SB) police in front of the famous textile shop, Globe Silk Store on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, along with his bodyguard, Yeong Nam, on March 2, 1988, when he was 66 years old. After his arrest in 1988, Chong Chor lived for another 11 years and passed away in Kuala Lumpur on May 9, 1997, due to heart disease. If you recall, the day of his death was ironic given the fact that he led a terrorist group that killed its own members—deeming them traitors—as well as innocent civilians, all to uphold communist ideology in Malaya. According to Chong Chor's confidential confession file, which was never disclosed to the public before 2013, he revealed the party's cruelty toward communist terrorists through the 'Elimination Campaign' program, which involved tracking down and eliminating members suspected of being government agents or traitors. The Elimination Campaign program revealed the deep-seated suspicion, paranoia, and mistrust that haunted the communist terrorist leadership throughout their armed movement in the jungles of Malaya, particularly in southern Thailand, which served as their headquarters.
Whether fabricated or truly from the heart, Chong Chor once told the Special Branch (SB) police during his detention that he never agreed with the implementation of the campaign. However, at the same time, he also admitted to having ordered the death penalty for seven of his own members on charges of being government agents. The internal turmoil within the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) actually caused a serious split, where the party divided into three factions: the central government, the 8th Regiment, and finally the 12th Regiment—information that is not widely known.

As a veteran MCP leader with the rank of reserve member of the Central Committee, Chong Chor's knowledge of communism was considered very solid. Due to his persistence, conviction, and dedication to fighting for communism, he was respected by all members of the 6th Assault Unit and other communist members in the party. According to Chong Chor's confidential confession file, the 6th Assault Unit of the Malayan Communist Party (MCP) lost 168 members since its formation on October 1, 1973: 83 were shot dead by security forces, 27 died from other causes, 38 were arrested, and 20 deserted the unit.
