Taiping, the First Age-Friendly City in Southeast Asia
Taiping has once again made history by being selected as the first and only Age-Friendly City in Southeast Asia, following its previous recognition as the third of the world's Top 100 Sustainable Destinations.
Borhan Abdul Halim, President of the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT), stated that this rating will transform Taiping into a city with an environment friendly to children, the elderly, and people with disabilities, which in turn will increase investment in Taiping. Borhan Abdul Halim added that this recognition will be officially conferred by the World Health Organization (WHO) after the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) successfully implemented various key criteria outlined by the organization to achieve age-friendly city status over a five-year period.
More than RM1 million has been spent by the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) on research processes over the past two years through a grant from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
This rating will not only make Taiping known globally, but the city will also be recognized as a retirement-friendly destination, attracting retirees to settle here and subsequently drawing in external investors.
The launch ceremony for this Age-Friendly City rating will be officiated by the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, on September 30, 2019, at a hotel to be selected in Taiping.
