Rubberized Road in Teluk Intan is the First in Malaysia
October 7, 2017, was a historic and significant date for all residents of Teluk Intan. This is because it marked the construction of the first prototype village road in Malaysia to use a rubber mixture.
Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong stated on his Facebook page that this event is a source of pride for the people of Teluk Intan. This road technology, which uses a rubber mixture, was applied to three roads in Kampung Sungai Kerawai, located in Teluk Intan.

Many hope that the use of this rubberized road technology can be expanded. Indirectly, this innovation can increase the demand and usage of natural rubber, which in turn could help stabilize rubber prices.
Research into this rubberized road technology has been a joint effort between the Malaysian Rubber Board (LGM) and the Public Works Department (JKR) since 2015, aiming to reach a new phase in rubber-asphalt mixture technology, which was first introduced over 60 years ago.
Previously, the use of rubber as a bitumen additive for road paving was actually attempted in 1950. A 90-meter trial stretch was built on Jalan Kota Bharu-Kuala Krai, but there was no continuity for the project due to the technological limitations of that era.
It is estimated that 4.2 tons of cup lump rubber will be used for every kilometer of road built. The rubberized road surface provides better grip for vehicle tires. Such technology should be implemented not only on sharp bends but also on regular roads.
