Perak FC May Reverse Decision to Withdraw from Super League If New Sponsors Are Secured
Despite having announced their withdrawal from next season's Super League, hope remains for Perak FC as the management is currently in talks with several new investors to save the team from 'folding' in 2025.
Perak FC Chairman, Datuk Seri Azim Zabidi, confirmed that active negotiations are underway with two to three parties interested in taking over the prestigious club. If everything goes smoothly, 'The Bos Gaurus' may still be able to remain in the local football scene.
"God willing, the decision (to withdraw) could change. We are in discussions with several investors, and we hope to reach an agreement for them to take over Perak FC," explained Azim on the Ngopi program on Channel 10 Malaysia.
Financial Issues the Cause of Withdrawal
Previously, Perak FC confirmed their withdrawal from the 2025 Super League due to an unbearable financial burden. Azim revealed that the management had spent nearly RM40 million to maintain the club, yet it was still not enough.
"We have tried our best, including investing heavily to develop the team, but without solid support, it becomes very difficult," he said.
Lack of Fan Support a Key Factor in Failure
One of the main factors in Perak FC's financial crisis was the failure of their main sponsor's product, XOX Berhad, to gain traction. Azim said they targeted at least 150,000 new subscribers within five years to generate revenue through SIM card top-ups.
However, after nearly four years, only 4,500 subscribers had signed up, with only 2,000 of them being active.
"As an investment company, we need to see returns. Not just in terms of money, but also marketing impact. Unfortunately, the response was very low. The fans themselves did not support this effort, so how can we continue to survive?" asked Azim.
Final Hope Rests on New Investors
Although the situation is difficult, Azim remains optimistic that with the entry of new investors, Perak FC can return to compete in the Malaysia League.
"We are still trying. If there are those interested in taking over with solid capital, this team can still be saved," he asserted.
If the negotiations are successful, loyal Perak FC fans may still have the chance to see the legendary club back in action on the national football stage.
However, if there is no resolution, the team that has won the Malaysia Cup eight times may have to 'take a break' for a while.
